A keen orchestral and chamber musician, Joseph is principal cellist and founding member of the Kammerensemble Konsonanz chamber orchestra with whom he recently performed Bruch’s Kol Nidrei as soloist. He is co-principal cellist with the Street Orchestra of London, an orchestra which performs classical music in unusual settings around London. Whilst living in Germany he was a member of the Junge Norddeutsche Philharmonie, the Junges Philharmonisches Orchester Niedersachsen and attended the Penderecki Orchestral Academy as well as performing early music with the Kapella 19 chamber orchestra. He is an enthusiastic chamber musician and recently performed with the RAM Cello Ensemble, at the Wigmore Hall for a Nash Ensemble side-by-side project, and previously with CelloSound Bremen.
As a soloist, Joseph Donmall performs regularly in the North West and in Germany. Concerto appearances include a performance of Lalo’s Cello Concerto with the Salford Symphony Orchestra at Salford University. Other notable performances include a Thursday Series concert at the Bridgewater Hall Manchester, recitals at Rochdale Paris and St Mary le Baum Churches and a concert at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club.
Joseph thoroughly enjoys giving workshops and outreach projects and is proud to be a member of the RAM Open Academy, with whom he regularly participates in a variety of outreach projects. He teaches cello for the London Music Masters, at the Junior RAM First String Experience and at Play for Progress, a charity working with unaccompanied refugee children. In 2014 he gave a Kinderkonzert at the Laisshalle Hamburg for the NDR Hamburg with his cello duo partner, Ana Lúcia Arigoni de Souza.
In 2008 he won the Gold Medal and 1st Prize in the Future Talent competition held in association with the Halle Orchestra, awarded by Sir Mark Elder.
Joseph is currently studying as a postgraduate with Prof. Josephine Knight, and baroque cello with Joseph Crouch, at the Royal Academy of Music, where he holds a Zara Nelson scholarship, and is also generously supported by the Kathleen Trust. He plays a 2014 cello made by Wilbert de Roo and is really looking forward to soon being able to play a cello built for him by his father.
